Homeschooling in Texas: What Parents Should Know

Homeschooling has been a legal alternative to public school in Texas since 1994, when the Texas Supreme Court decided Leeper v. Arlington ISD. Texas homeschools are treated as private schools.

According to the Texas Home School Coalition, the instruction must be bona fide (not a sham), the curriculum must be in visual form such as books, workbooks or video, and it must cover reading, spelling, grammar, math and good citizenship.

For legal questions, go to THSC or the Texas Education Agency rather than relying on this guide.

Sports & Movement

Can homeschool students play UIL sports for Hays CISD?

Under Texas Senate Bill 401, school districts must let homeschool students take part in UIL activities unless their school board opts out. Hays CISD does not appear on UIL’s list of districts that opted out for 2026-27 (checked October 2026). Students participate at the school they’re zoned to, so contact that campus’s athletics or activities office about eligibility and paperwork. UIL’s homeschool FAQ has the details.

Hays Communities YMCA

The YMCA at 465 Buda Sportsplex Drive offers pools, recreation and family programming, which is useful for swim lessons and daytime activities.

Field Trips Close to Home

The Meadows Center at Spring Lake in San Marcos lists homeschool programs and field trips, and its glass-bottom boat tour is an easy outing for curious kids. For more ideas, browse our Things to Do guide and Outdoors & Parks guide.
